Why Your STI Needs a Turbo Inlet Upgrade

WHY YOUR STI NEEDS A TURBO INLET UPGRADE

A Subaru WRX STI that runs lean, leaks boost, and leaves you stranded on the side of the road is nothing to brag about. Why would any of those scenarios happen? It’s your poorly designed OEM Turbo Inlet. The OEM Turbo Inlet on your STI is made from short lasting plastic that is susceptible to cracking, flexing, and malfunction setting your build up not for success but inevitable failure. The Subaru engineers failed to make this component long lasting and durable which is exactly why you need to upgrade. The OEM Turbo Inlet is brittle, inefficient, and holds your vehicle back from its full potential.

WHAT DOES A TURBO INLET DO?

In basic terms, the turbo Inlet is what connects the intake system to your engine. In order for the turbo to spool, it needs air from the environment. So, the intake sucks air into the system and passes it through the turbo Inlet, where it is directed to the turbo/engine for performance. The turbo inlet can be thought of as air’s “final” stop before entering the turbo for spooling. Because airflow is directed right through the turbo inlet, your turbo inlet piping and design is crucial for performance. The OEM turbo inlet and turbo inlet piping are designed with rigid edges, pockets, and leaks causing inefficient air flow, leaving you all the reason to upgrade.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO UPGRADING?

The benefits to upgrading are preventative maintenance, increased power, and more engine efficiency. As noted above, the STI factory turbo inlet is made from brittle plastic that tends to break due to heat and pressure exposure. Long-term inefficiencies can wear down engine components, such as the turbo, through debris ingestion, oil seal damage, or bearing wear due to shaft play. An aftermarket turbo inlet can provide protection for these expensive and crucial power components.

A more efficient engine can create power easier, run cooler, and use less fuel as a result. By upgrading your turbo inlet to a more efficiently designed option, your engine can get cooler air faster and more efficiently, allowing it not only to run better but also to produce more power. In addition, vacuum and boost leaks can cause your air to fuel ratio to be thrown off due to poor MAF readings. This can result in your engine running lean, meaning your engine is being starved of fuel, and can cause long term damage to your engine if gone unnoticed.

As air is pushed into the engine, the turbo spools faster and creates more power and airflow for your engine to use. So, if you are looking to protect your engine from damage, give it better performance, and increase power, a turbo inlet upgrade is inevitable.

DOES THIS REQUIRE A TUNE?

In most cases, a turbo inlet upgrade on the STI should be paired with proper tuning. Unlike the WRX, the STI’s fueling and airflow system is more sensitive to changes in intake dynamics, and a higher-flow inlet can alter how air is measured and delivered under boost. While the car may run without a tune, recalibration is strongly recommended to ensure proper fueling, drivability, and engine safety.

HOW DOES SILICONE COMPARE TO OEM PLASTIC?

All of the high quality aftermarket turbo inlet upgrades for the STI are made from a durable silicone construction with stainless steel wiring for reinforcement on the interior. According to Cobb, High-quality silicone construction resists high engine bay temperatures, keeping intake air closer to ambient temperature for optimal engine performance. Silicone inlets are affordable, flexible, and easy to install due to their flexible design. This material also holds up well to high heat environments and absorbs noise providing a smooth intake sound. Removing the poorly designed plastic component and upgrading to durable silicone is the best choice you can make for your vehicle's overall health and longevity.

WHAT BRAND IS THE BEST?

So now you understand why your OEM Turbo Inlet needs replacing on your Subaru WRX STI, but you are plagued with options that quite frankly all look about the same. Let’s break down the top three recommendations that we have for your new turbo inlet.

#1) COBB Tuning Silicone Turbo Inlet V2 2008-2021 STI

First we have COBB because it’s the most fully engineered system combining structure, airflow, and fitment engineering into one complete design. The V2 design specifically addresses known issues like inlet collapse under vacuum with a steel wire structure and 6-ply silicone, while also improving airflow through a revised internal air path and fittings that keep airways smooth and obstruction-free. This combination of structural integrity, airflow optimization, and precise fitment makes it the strongest option for a replacement.

#2) Perrin Turbo Inlet Hose 2004-2021 STI

Perrin lands in second as it delivers extremely strong real world performance with a simpler design philosophy. Like COBB, they use reinforced silicone construction and a smooth larger internal diameter to improve airflow and reliability over the stock inlet. Their turbo inlet checks all the important boxes: stainless steel wire reinforcement, smooth interior, larger diameter, and high-temp rated connectors. The reason it sits just behind COBB is that it doesn’t mention minimizing internal obstructions from fittings as it’s focused more on being a perfected version of the OEM-style hose, rather than reworking the system as a whole.

Perrin is the only one offering both true 2.4" OEM-style and oversized 3" inlet options.

#3) OVERTAKE Silicone Turbo Inlet Hose 2004-2021 STI

Overtake comes in third as another fantastic option. It has 5-ply silicone, steel wire reinforcement, larger diameter, and plug-and-play fitment, which puts it functionally in the same category as Perrin and COBB. It also clearly targets airflow improvements by removing turbulence from the OEM accordion design and focuses on a smooth internal surface. Where it lands in third is in the depth of engineering detail and component quality. They do not list high-temp rated fittings or airflow-specific refinements beyond diameter and turbulence reduction. It’s a strong OEM replacement upgrade, but not as detailed or refined as Perrin, and not as system-focused as COBB.

That being said, any of these options are going to be a MASSIVE improvement from the failing, inefficient, and brittle OEM turbo inlet. There are some slight differences between these brands, but overall the pricing and performance deviation between these options is going to be very minimal. As always, we recommend what is best for your budget and your build. The important thing is being informed and knowing what decisions to make to keep your Subaru happy and healthy, because a happy car most definitely leads to a happy driver.

Before ordering, remember to verify your turbo inlet diameter!

INSTALLATION PROCESS

2004-2021 STI:

  • Disconnect battery and remove intake/MAF assembly

  • Remove intercooler (or front mount piping)

  • Remove throttle body and set aside

  • Disconnect BPV recirc hose from inlet

  • Remove PCV connector and break inlet-side fitting for clearance

  • Disconnect remaining inlet hoses

  • EVAP, boost control, and PCV lines

  • Unbolt EVAP solenoid and remove OEM turbo inlet

  • Move power steering line if needed

  • Pre-fit clamp and install new inlet under manifold onto turbo

  • Tighten turbo clamp and reconnect BPV hose

  • Reconnect PCV system and install supplied fittings/hoses

  • Reinstall throttle body, intake, and intercooler

  • Start vehicle, check for leaks, and test drive
